What to Expect in a Yoga classA Hatha Yoga class addresses all aspects of the individual: the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. As these facets of the individual come into harmony and balance, the mind becomes clear and calm which allows us to experience our own true nature of peace and happiness.
We begin with centering and bringing the focus to observe the breath and the stillness within. From that stillness we repeat the universal sound of OM and other sound vibrations which promote a calming effect of the emotions as well as the nervous system.
From here we move into the Asana (postures and movements) portion of the class, as appropriate for the level and style of the class. The asanas are designed to develop strength and flexibility, to stimulate and tone the body's internal organs and glands and to balance the nervous system.
To give the body a chance to assimilate the benefits from the yoga poses we include a guided deep relaxation.
Towards the end of the class we practice some of the specific breathing techniques or pranayama and close the class with peace chants.
