It is my aspiration to help you cultivate and nurture a calm and clear mind and to assist you in developing a flexible and strong body by sharing the yogic principles and techniques I have learned over the years.

What made a lasting impression on me when I took my first yoga class in the early ‘70’s was how the teacher approached her life and work, with joy and clarity of mind and she remained calm and loving under all circumstances.  Some of the other class participants at the time seemed ancient from my 18 yr. old perspective; some must have been in their 60’s at the time, but they were just as flexible as I was, or even more so.  I knew then and there that I would make a life-long commitment to age like that, if at all possible.

Trying to figure out which direction to take in college, I opted to study biology at VCU and UVA. Thinking that by learning all about the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees I would also gain understanding of myself as part of the web of life.  I find the natural world awe-inspiring and the inner life equally fascinating.

Yoga workshops, retreats and teacher trainings, both as a student and as a teacher, as well as being a parent of 4 and an active member of the community and as a yoga studio owner have all provided ample opportunities for inner growth, and continue to do so.

After the youngest of our 4 children went to pre-school, I went to massage school (receiving National Certification in 1998), delving into the study of anatomy and physiology of the human body as well as becoming certified in Reiki I and II, Healing touch, Reflexology and other such modalities.  I found a bridge between my interest in yoga and massage and when I discovered Acu-Yoga, as taught by Michael Gach at the Acupressure Institute in Berkely, CA. .  Mukunda Stiles' Structural Yoga Therapy training allowed me to further explore human anatomy and become familiar with Ayurvedic principles. (Private Structural Yoga Therapy sessions are available by appointment.)

I have completed Integral Yoga® Basic and Intermediate teacher training at the Satchidananda Ashram in Yogaville, Virginia, Acu-Yoga Teacher Training and am certified to teach Structural Yoga.  I am also certified as a Structural Yoga Therapist by Mukunda Stiles.

Local teaching experiences include teaching for the YMCA, The Weight Club, Optimal Health Associates as well as in the public schools in Montgomery County at Elementary and High School levels since 1988 and at Akke's Yoga Place since 2000. In addition to teaching Yoga at Gentle, Beginner and Intermediate levels, I teach Prenatal Yoga and have taught Yoga for Children.

I have been blessed to have the opportunity to co-teach with Swami Asokananda at the Intermediate Teacher Training Programs at Satchidananda Ashram, Yogaville and at the Integral Yoga Institute in Coimbatore, India as well as at the Integral Yoga Institute in Almancil, Portugal and in Bacalar, Mexico.

I am registered with the Yoga Alliance as an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher with over 500 hours of training (E-RYT-500).

When she teaches, Elizabeth invites students to be “in the moment” embracing their luminous nature and the courage needed to meet themselves where they are on their mat, not where they think they should be; presence, acceptance, & recognition of possibility in the moment being crucial elements on the journey to well-being. Elizabeth believes that it is the birthright of all beings to live a full and joyful life of vitality, well-being, and growth and is excited to have the privilege of supporting folks on their unique path to discovering and remembering the astonishing light of their own being.

Yoga asana (postures), anatomy and biomechanics, the philosophy and psychology of Yoga, meditation, mindfulness, relaxation and stress reduction, self-care, journaling and other forms of writing, relationship, travel, and animals are among Elizabeth‘s broad and varied interests. She loves to share what she has learned with others in a safe and nurturing way and readily acknowledges that when she does, those who come to learn are among her wisest and most cherished teachers.

Elizabeth has been practicing Yoga for more than a dozen years. In 2006 she earned her 200-hour Yoga teaching certification in Kripalu Yoga at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health and has since completed 250 hours of Kripalu’s 500-hour Yoga teaching certification. A life-long learner, Elizabeth continues to study and train in the many aspects of and approaches to Yoga, meditation, and wellness.
